I need to improve my run

April, May and I signed up for Larian Koperasi Perak 2017 that held on 10 September 2017 in my town. April was in secondary school 5KM category, May was in primary school 3.5KM and I was in women veteran 7KM category.

Honestly, I told my beloved family that I was going to bag myself a champion, but too bad that I could only make it for 2nd place this time. Yes, I was kinda disappointed at myself.

As for my two daughters,  May was at position 12th,  April was at position 23rd in their own category. Not a bad result, I reckon.

Let me tell more about my run, I was leading just a minute I started off.  After running about 3KM, two people ran close behind me. Just one glance, I saw a lady and a man ran neck to neck. The lady wanted to overtake me, and she could easily do it that time. However, the man who ran next to her did the side coaching by instructing her to stay behind me and keep the pace. I heard their conversation clearly, as he didn't speak just once, but a few times to remind her to keep following my pace. I tried to ignore them, but to be honest, they affected my running performance.

Just 1.5 KM to finishing line, the man instructed her to speed up and overtake me. It was my weakness that I had run out of fuel, and I couldn't pace up at last and thus lose the run.....T____T.

Apparently, the lady who won the champion and the man who coached her are from the same running group. This running group won the most amount of prizes in this event. I got to know this from the paper on the next day.

It is a good lesson and experience for me. I take it positively that there was someone who wanted to win badly by having side coached by the group member throughout the run, and I completed my run all on my own proudly.

I have got a prize money of RM100. Minus our registration fees (April RM20, May RM10 and myself  RM30), I still had RM40 to spend on the dinner as in the picture below. lol!

Since I couldn't bag the champion this time, I know I can't stay running my comfortable pace anymore, I must improve my running techniques in my future training. I hope I can do better in my next run.

p/s: To anyone who read this post, please share with me whether it is right to have side coaching loud and clear during a race. I always run alone in the gym and I take part in not more than 5 running events.

  3. I always wish that I could run like this but I do not have the stamina and my health is not that good, I may faint halfway if I were to run like this so I always envy those who are good runners

Second is already good, don't push yourself too hard, enjoy the process

    1. Libby, you can run too if you start running slowly now. I started to run 7 years ago .

  4. Lina would have an answer for your question as she is a very experience runner. though you are not that happy with the way they affected your run, like the others above, I think it is the journey of having fun while running with your girls that matters more so congrats on getting the MYR100 prize!

  5. Yannie, getting second placing is still an achievement you should be proud of! Of course it would be better if you placed first as you had wanted, but you did your best! Lina can give you valuable comments. I am also curious what she has to say about side coaching.

  6. I'm in no position to comment as I've never participated in any run but one thing is for sure, you've done great and will do better with experience. Don't be disheartened. Take this as a lesson as you did learn something new.

  7. I think you are doing very well! Maybe you can run with the pros but do not over exert yourself ! I got injured now and need some professional help while getting slower now. Hope to come back to run a full marathon at least.

  8. A top marathoner once reminded me. Running is about ourselves. And it is up to us to react and learn not tho be affected by external factors.

Focus on your run and adjust it accordingly. The lady have a different strategy than yours. That's all. After all, coach or no coach, it is up to us and our legs to carry us through.

I have to say, if you run in KL... Anything sub60 minutes in 10K can bring you top 10 placing. To get champion placing, you have to train and dip your pacing to something around 5min/km or below.

A 60 year old top veteran woman can still run in below 40 minutes for her 10K.

I'm not a champion but I agree with what some are saying. Getting a coach or aat least joining a running group (Taiping Road runners for instance) will benefit you greatly.

Running in a group with others? Not now, still very occupy with my personal commitment. Shall consider in future.

  9. You had done very well to get 2nd placing and a BIG Congratulations to Yannie - X 029!!!

I am not a runner but I have a wife who used to run & cycle long distance, a lot until she found a new love for hiking & wushu instead. A hiker needs another type of motivation and stamina altogether as her recent hike to Mount Rinjani took 3 nights & 4 days!!!! She also encountered very similar incident like yours about a b@#*^ who bad mouthed about her to others. It bothered my wifey a bit & she had to text me from Indonesia to KL!! LOLOL So I could understand your case well.

I am not sure whether you could see my FB where I have a friend in Penang who leads a big gang of Ironman runners. The way they train almost daily with distance running and 30 laps swimming is not easy. He told me that they need sheer mind power and will power to succeed, yet they also had sore losers naturally! So this is common to see big events like Ironman and Le Tour de France where they have lots of coaches & supporters cheering them with flags, banners and loud speakers! Yannie might cry there and come back with another post. Competitions are all about using tactics to attack and win their opponents, so that is normal. I will give you ear plugs for your next run and bring TOYO flags to cheer you wokay!!!

    Congratulations again!

    1. Wakakaka! Love you comment Anay. You are so humorous and you had successfully put a smile back to crying Mak Yannie's face.
Honestly speaking, my Jino observed the whole event, and he told me the same thing like Anay and lina said here.

He told me to focus on my run and try not to affect by all factors coming from outside. He also said that I need to improve my fitness and strength to be success in future.

      Thanks Anay again!
